Artist Talk with Alexandra Navratil
The archive is the central starting point for the work of Swiss artist Alexandra Navratil (*1978, lives and works in Zurich and Amsterdam). Navratil is interested in systems of representation, and how different media like cinema, architecture or photography relate to the narratives they develop and the reality they describe. Research is a consistent part of her creative process, leading to the creation of an extensive personal archive of research and source material. Discussing her works Objects Perceive Me (2010) and Sample Frames (2011), as well as the research work to her current project Beautiful Curves of Perfect Symmetry, Navratil will tackle questions of the archive and its system of ordering, the limits of searching and retrieving, and the archive as a disciplinary means and sociologic tool for cultural standardization and normalization.
Objects Perceive Me (2010) is currently shown in the exhibition Collect the WWWorld. The Artist as Archivist in the Internet Age at the House of Electronic Arts Basel.
